When I first stumbled across this page I started getting very very worried. That my first impression was that it was real and not a joke is quite symbolic of my feelings towards Ashcroft and perhaps the Bush Administration in general. Scary.

The highly intelligent nation that is Germany was manipulated by emotional propaganda of the Nazi party now the united states of Texas plays the terror card to justify anything that they do along with the dictatorship that they call the royal Saudi family as their partners in crime. the elimination of the blanket primary by the supreme court to force people to declare themselves as a member of a political party is a recipe for an american inquisition look for a biological attack on america then they will be able to quaratine the political party oops I mean the sick and infected to spare the nation from the ills of free thinkers

paul…
you wouldn’t happen to hate the republicans, do you? or at least bush? i’m no fan, but c’mon! however reading your dire warnings i am predicting that this inquisition you speak of will happen in the next several weeks. ah!
so with that in mind i hope you will take the time to read my reply to your comment here and learn how to add more than one period to a comment. that way you’ll be ready for the inquisition when they come because you’ll know the difference between a period at the end of a sentence and the dots above the “i”s in “inquisition”. they’ll let you off the hook then.
if you work on your punctuation i’ll work on my Capitalization and maybe together we can beat them.

Huh?
First of all, it’s whitehouse.org…not a government site, so as The Dugh mentioned, not real. I appreciate The Dugh’s mentioning it as a first reaction thing and that one might believe this site as true (I’m reminded of something that was on Defiant about looking for political gain through expressing that Blacks will soon lose their right to vote (or something like that)).
Sorry, I’m tangential (and yes, I make up my own words, you figure it out).
The fact is that while I support and appreciate some groups’ efforts to prevent government control of my life, the “John Ashcroft Scare” was something created by the extreme left because they hate the man. Bush appointed him, so obviously he’s just as bad. Is there a problem with the Patriot Act? Sure there is, but there’s also a problem with terrorism. Does that justify having homes torn down for the sake of protecting the masses? No, of course not, but I don’t recall large groups of people being displaced by the government in an attempt to find the bad guys.
Thankfully there are fringe groups that are over-zealous and allow for freedoms to remain in place, but it’s starting to get annoying to think that any adminstration would have acted differently…I would be interested in knowing what the alternative would have been, had Al Gore won the election…it appears some people would support an opening of borders and tax breaks to terrorists if they operate within our borders…
Yes, that’s bullshit, but I’m curious as to what the reaction might have been that would be acceptable to those who don’t like the current “solution.”

well, for one thing i am not on the fringe of the left. still, i hate john ashcroft. or perhaps more rationally i strongly disagree with his appointment and am disappointed by his actions in his position and question his motivations and means.
i’m assuming you are wondering what alternatives to the USA Patriot Act there could have been in your last paragraph.
first of all, the entire act is not “evil”. there are parts that are useful and amend previous acts that either were not effective in execution or contained loopholes. the fervor over terrorism, while relevant, has been used as an excuse by the administration to push through all sorts of crap legislation. i am not trying to say terrorism isn’t out there in the world and in that terrorists aren’t in america. terrorism was a reality in the world long before september 11, 2001. the only difference is we were attacked on our own land this time.
the USA Patriot Act is a knee-jerk, emotional reaction to it, not a rational reaction. it is like finding out someone stole a pencil off your desk at home and installing a $100,000 surveillance and alarm system to make sure it never happens again.
the only saving grace of *most* of the Act is that it expires.
if al gore had won i could probably predict that bin laden would be pursued to the ends of the earth, overtly or covertly. i could also predict that we would not be in iraq. we might not have gotten bin laden yet, but we would have found many other terrorists and brought them to justice. we would not have lost over a thousand lives in iraq and created a huge debt financing the thing. i might be wrong, but i think i’m probably close to accurate.
hopefully that answers your questions, Mr. Mookee!

I know I went a little over the top on that one but the hysteria of the 9-11 attacks and Dick Cheney threating that a nuclear bomb could go off in america if they lose the white house makes one wonder who the terrorist really are.
December 31st, 1969 at 4:00 pm
it is true that nothing makes the terrorists jobs easier than to see the government issuing comments that breed more fear than calm. the stupid alert system is one. not only have they cried wolf with that too many times, but it was stupid to begin with.
i see this administration sort of like the kids who are really good at sports being asked to lead the chess club. not only do they not “get” chess, but they are adverse to chess players. they will be very good when called upon to play sports, but right now we need a chess player.

I am totally anti-bush, ashcroft, rumsfeld and cheney, yet i’m a Conservative. Now Why do we elect corporate traitor idiots to office that destroy conservatism and replace it with authoritarinism?
December 31st, 1969 at 4:00 pm
a rhetorical question?
some people elect those kinds of people to office because they don’t vote in their own self-interest (that’s a myth) but their morality. unfortunately most of the conservative base is being told their morality from the hard-core christian conservatives instead of figuring it out themselves. this leaves them ripe for the authoritarian oligarchs to manipulate. it is very sad but, alas, very true.
