Somehow I’m not terribly impressed with this. I thought there’d be rioting or at least some rock throwing. Their situation still sucks.

I was thinking more along the lines that the Hurricane hit over two years ago, and the “richest, most powerful nation on Earth” can’t seem to recover from a natural disaster any better than some third world country. I was outraged that people have to have somewhat violent protests in order to have their voices heard when their homes are about to be destroyed (again) to make way for rich folks.

How about moving? The government hasn’t come to save us! Boo hoo. In any situation the rich are going to be able to recover more quickly than others … THEY’RE RICH for god sake.

If the government isn’t going to come in and save you then move somewhere where they don’t have to, or has the Katrina disaster simply turned into an excuse to be lazy and blame the government for something else? I’m not defending them, just wondering when this baby baby crap is going to stop.

Mookee, why do we have governments? What purpose do they serve?

I forgot. The government is to take care of me.

Why the hell do I bother working?

Okay, along with health care, *basic* housing and education, the government of any country as wealthy as the U.S. should *absolutely* take care of its own - be they rich or poor - in times of need. I don’t feel I’m being a bleeding heart here, either. Take a hard look at how much you pay in taxes (ALL of them) each year. Should anyone really have to pay - either in cash or military service - for college (assuming you had good grades in high school)? I don’t think so, any more than I think I should have had to pay over $300 per month for an HMO during the many years I was self-employed. And for that matter, should sick seniors who’ve worked hard all their lives have to bankrupt themselves before getting a slice of medicaid? No, because they already paid their premiums, quite literally, in fact.

I’m convinced these are major reasons why people get so pissed off when anyone successfully receives a benefit or payment from the government - they think, “I don’t get squat from Uncle Sam, so why should that fella over there?” Well, stop being angry with the poor sod who just scored a food stamp and start getting angry at the government that pads the pockets of big businesses with “corporate welfare” payouts while forcing average men and women to pay for so many things that taxes fund in other wealthy nations.

So yeah, given my belief that taxation in America is largely government-sanctioned theft, those people in New Orleans should absolutely be “saved” by the government. The government should just step in and rescue their asses. And while they’re at it, they’re welcome to pick up my student loan tab.

As contributors to the tax kitty, we’re just as entitled - if not more so - to claim some sort of reasonable benefit from that kitty as those non-contributors who can’t help but rely upon it for survival. Common sense bears this out, even if the crooks who run this country want us to believe otherwise. And yes, there’d even be money left over for more guns.

In case anyone is wondering why I’ve pretty much hijacked this post as an excuse to rant, it’s because I just pre-figured my 2007 taxes and I’m irritated.
