Big Railgun Tests Imminent - Updated w/ Video

The Navy is testing a new hypervelocity railgun in the next 24 hours. To quote Tony Stark, “They say the best weapon is the one you never have to fire. I prefer the weapon you only need to fire once. That’s how dad did it, that’s how America does it, and it’s worked out pretty well so far.”

When one is referring to solid slugs hitting a target 200 miles away at Mach 5, there’s really not much else to say.

- Update - Test successful, video in comments.

Planet of the Apes Production Pics

Who knew Kanye West had a blog? And who knew he would find so many really cool things out there, like these production stills and casual shots from Planet of the Apes? I love seeing everyone in costume in every day scenes. Kanye has tons of other entries covering everything from interesting fashion to future technology and, of course, music. I’ve actually bookmarked the site!

Study Says Engineers Become Terrorists

The Register brings to our attention a study that asserts that Engineers are “over-represented among jihadi terrorists.” They lump into the nefarious group architects and “all computer related studies” as feeder groups for the old AQ.

The data was of course gleaned from a variety of reliable sources, including Wikipedia.

Look! Up in the Sky!

It’s an idiot risking a broken neck!

Apparently Thunderbolt Aerosystems is trying to resurrect the Jet-Pack idea… again. Just strap 188 pounds of equipment filled with 98 pounds of Kerosene and Hydrogen Peroxide and (if you weigh less than 180 yourself) you can go on a 75 second, 3/4 mile cruise to wherever, while everyone in a 5-mile radius looks around for that hideous noise!

Best of all? It’s only $100,000

Golly!

Celebrity Lookalike

This is a pretty cool little tool. It allows you to upload a picture of yourself, scans for the face, then matches you up to your celebrity lookalikes.

Click “Collage” in the left column to get started. Mac Users will need to use Firefox (no Safari support yet)

My results (with old smarmy picture, since I didn’t have a recent one handy) are in the comments.

Wet Riffs from XKCD

When webcomic XKCD posted this one you just know the rule would be followed: “Rule 34 of the Internet: if you can imagine it there is porn of it.”

Here’s result… NSFW!

Recreating the Omaha Beach Landing

In Saving Private Ryan we got to see the most spectacular recreation of the landing on Omaha Beach in film today. It took thousands of extras and probably millions of dollars. Can three guys recreate a similar stunning film segment in four days?

I think so. Via bOING bOING.
