Evolving Things

Since February 12 is Darwin’s 200th Birthday, and this year is the 150th anniversary of Origins of Species, some cool science news seems to be in order.

First of all, a new transitional whale fossil* has been discovered, filling in yet another detail of the lineage from land to sea that whales have.

Secondly, evolution of fence lizards has been observed recently, and apparently has taken about one human lifetime for it to happen.

And third, take some time to visit the E. coli Long Term Experimental Evolution Project and read up on how an experiment has allowed the bacteria to evolve a new diet over tens of years and hundreds of thousands of generations.

*all species are transitional – it’s a continuum.
