Talk With a Pirate!

In case you missed it, a group of Somali Pirates hijacked a ship the other day that’s carrying a… well… boatload of Russian tanks.

Right now they’re surrounded by the US Navy, and demanding a $20 million dollar ransom.

The cool thing? The NYT actually interviewed the pirates. It’s not exactly what you’d expect. (link may require registration)

Buying Junk Ammo With Your Tax Dollars

Link to NYT, may require registration.

When the United States Army decided this week to suspend the main supplier of munitions to Afghan security forces from future federal work, it did so after a field investigation documented what it called an act of fraud.

Mr. Diveroli’s company, AEY Inc. of Miami Beach, received a two-year contract in January 2007, potentially worth $298 million, to provide Afghan security forces with ammunition. At the time, Mr. Diveroli was 21.

AEY’s Afghan contract did not set an age limit for any munitions or require it to be tested. This meant that despite providing millions of cartridges more than 40 years old, Mr. Diveroli’s company was in compliance with the contract, Army contracting officials have said.

…years ago the Defense Intelligence Agency published a detailed guide of manufacturer markings for military small-arms cartridges made around the world.

These keys enable investigators to trace a cartridge to the factory where it was made. The New York Times used these old intelligence charts last fall to show that ammunition shipped to Afghanistan by AEY was Chinese and had been made in the 1960s.

Death Star Destruction a Conspiracy!

We’ve all heard the story of the destruction of the Death Star. We’ve all seen the footage. But what if everything we were told was wrong?

Presented here are some of the results of my soul-searching regarding this painful event. Like many citizens, I have many questions that I would like answered: was the mighty Imperial government really too incompetent to prevent a handful of untrained nerf-herders from destroying one of their most prized assets? Or are they hiding something from us? Who was really behind the attack? Why did they want the Death Star destroyed? No matter what the answers, we have a problem.

Ironic Justice…?

Two unrelated articles that somehow ring with the faint bell of ironic justice. The first is about the tree huggers in Berkeley. One of them fell out of the tree he was trying to protect and broke bones. Did the tree push him out?

The second is about a man who, while fleeing from police, jumped in a lake and was promptly killed by a nine foot alligator. Who knew the police were so desperate that they were recruiting wildlife?

Batman, by Dostoyevsky

Batman, by Dostoyevsky, from Brian HughesIt’s a time honored tradition to make parodies of popular culture. But I’m not sure if doing a version of Batman as Dostoyevsky would write it counts. There’s something disturbing and existentially torturous about it, which I guess is the point. You gotta laugh about how Robin is sent up, though…

The Most Disturbing Children’s Book!

This has got to be the most disturbing children’s book. Ever.

Thanks (?) to Banana Boy who, though seemingly innocent, has a very disturbed sense of humor.

X-Ray Ketai

While everyone in America is going bananas over Apple’s newly release iPhone (anyone have theirs yet?) Japan has been way ahead of the curve. Their cell phones (called “ketai”) and what they can use them for are leaps and bounds ahead of us. In fact, there’s now an x-ray cell phone… Women beware! Via Japundit.

A Little Cowboy Justice

Imagine we had punishments like this in America… China is sentencing a corrupt official, the former head of their food and drug administration, to DEATH for accepting bribes and fast-tracking drugs for distribution.

Snakes (almost) on a Plane

I think the title speaks for itself but here you go

Customs officers at Cairo’s airport today detained a man bound for Saudi Arabia who was trying to smuggle 700 live snakes on a plane, airport authorities said.

They should make a movie! Thanks to Eric for the link!

Bury Me Like a Gansta, Tovarich

Russian Mafia love the bling. So much so that ordinary tombstones just aren’t, you know, bling enough. So what do they get instead? Standies.
