Gremlins v. The PVR

Personal video recorders like Tivo have come a long way, but they are still subject to problems and, apparently Gremlins (from the movie of the same name).

Death Star Destruction a Conspiracy!

We’ve all heard the story of the destruction of the Death Star. We’ve all seen the footage. But what if everything we were told was wrong?

Presented here are some of the results of my soul-searching regarding this painful event. Like many citizens, I have many questions that I would like answered: was the mighty Imperial government really too incompetent to prevent a handful of untrained nerf-herders from destroying one of their most prized assets? Or are they hiding something from us? Who was really behind the attack? Why did they want the Death Star destroyed? No matter what the answers, we have a problem.

Rescuing Hostages in Iran

A long time ago, before a few of you were even born, Iran had a little revolution and took the American embassy in Tehran over and held our people hostage for 444 days. This caused President Jimmy Carter to likely lose his reelection to Ronald Reagan, who would then get busted for selling arms to Iran. Yes, it’s a simplification, but you’ll live.

The cool thing that I had never heard was that in addition to the failed attempt to rescue the main group of hostages, there was another attempt to save a separate group of Americans. This involved a fake movie studio working with an actual script based on Roger Zelazny’s book, The Lord of Light. This CIA operation involved Oscar winning artists, sets designed by famous comic book illustrator Jack Kirby, a separate plan to build a science fiction theme park in Colorado, and Canada forging its own passports. Sound crazy? It’s not. What an amazing story!

More Rambo? No!

With the latest installment (and hopefully the last installment) of Rambo in the theaters, there’s news that Harvey Weinstein wants to make another one. No! At least not unless it’s Son of Rambow, which I’m really looking forward to after seeing this trailer.

Who knew Kanye West had a blog? And who knew he would find so many really cool things out there, like these production stills and casual shots from Planet of the Apes? I love seeing everyone in costume in every day scenes. Kanye has tons of other entries covering everything from interesting fashion to future technology and, of course, music. I’ve actually bookmarked the site!

Recreating the Omaha Beach Landing

In Saving Private Ryan we got to see the most spectacular recreation of the landing on Omaha Beach in film today. It took thousands of extras and probably millions of dollars. Can three guys recreate a similar stunning film segment in four days?

I think so. Via bOING bOING.
