The more I look at this chart, the more depressed I get. Not only am I apparently in the wrong field, but I am not even close to the median income for that field. Frack!
Wow. I suddenly feel like I was thrown back in time.
A Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have.Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.
Someone should make this fellow read out loud the Loving v. Virginia case.
In case you missed it, a group of Somali Pirates hijacked a ship the other day that’s carrying a… well… boatload of Russian tanks.
Right now they’re surrounded by the US Navy, and demanding a $20 million dollar ransom.
The cool thing? The NYT actually interviewed the pirates. It’s not exactly what you’d expect. (link may require registration)
It’s not something people talk about but apparently it’s true: working with stupid people can kill you.

Very clever, very funny. Wonder if it’s an actual interview.
If only the news were this good all the time. Or even sometimes…

When the United States Army decided this week to suspend the main supplier of munitions to Afghan security forces from future federal work, it did so after a field investigation documented what it called an act of fraud.
…
Mr. Diveroli’s company, AEY Inc. of Miami Beach, received a two-year contract in January 2007, potentially worth $298 million, to provide Afghan security forces with ammunition. At the time, Mr. Diveroli was 21.
…
AEY’s Afghan contract did not set an age limit for any munitions or require it to be tested. This meant that despite providing millions of cartridges more than 40 years old, Mr. Diveroli’s company was in compliance with the contract, Army contracting officials have said.
…
…years ago the Defense Intelligence Agency published a detailed guide of manufacturer markings for military small-arms cartridges made around the world. These keys enable investigators to trace a cartridge to the factory where it was made. The New York Times used these old intelligence charts last fall to show that ammunition shipped to Afghanistan by AEY was Chinese and had been made in the 1960s.
Ah China, land of Emperors, Kung-Fu, Forbidden Cities, Great Walls, Zhang Ziyi (rowr!), Taoism, Beautiful Landscapes, owner of our National Debt, Favored Trading Partner, and Gracious Host to the 2008 Beijing Olympics! This grandiose world class event is of course going to be exceptionally memorable for at least two reasons: First, in order to ensure sunny days, China will be Blowing up Clouds who refuse to comply with the government’s directives to steer away from Olympic sites, and Second, it will be the first Olymics where all the athletes will be wearing Gas Masks while competing in order to breathe.

What do you do when you’re a totalitarian government in the midst of collapse with tens of thousands of secret document to get rid of? Shred them of course. Unless you jam the shredders, then you tear them up by hand and try to get to the incinerators. Too bad for East Germany then that they never made it that far.
Now thanks to technology, all those documents are getting scanned and stitched together by computers and all the secrets exposed.
Watch for bonfires on the White House lawn come November. Oh, wait, didn’t the Veep’s office burn last month? Let the independent speculative analysis begin!
In more “freak you out about the stability of your nation” news, it seems that the Lakota Sioux are fed up enough with being ignored that they are seceding from the Union and have sent ambassadors abroad to gain recognition as an independent nation. Why are they doing this? Apparently their infant mortality rate is five times higher than the rest of the States, their male life expectancy is 44 years old (lowest in the world), they have an 85% unemployment rate, their teen suicide rates are 150% higher than US average, and 98% of them live below the poverty rate. So in essence, they have nothing to lose by doing so.
Reportedly, Bolivia is taking the news very seriously and plans to recognize the new nation.
Coverage is sparse online, I am reporting from radio news.
