Independent Speculative Analysis

Or in more common parlance: Conspiracy Theories. Here’s 30 of them to spend some time reading about.

Now I’m a firm believer that large-scale conspiracies don’t actually exist, but I do find that they make nifty stories. I also think it’s a good exercise in critical thinking to consider them, and to find the flaws in reason or bad science.

It also shows natural disasters, and the names of famous folks who died that day too!

Of most interest to me was that John Hancock died on my birthday in 1793.

Q! Household Female Fiction Characters

My friend Deano had an interesting question today. How many fictional female characters that are household names can you list? It’s a harder question to answer than you might think! Do you have any answers?

Q! Social Bookmarking?

You might have noticed a few icons at the bottom of each article. These are links to social bookmarking sites so you can share the content of these pages, should you so wish, with others who use the same services. I’ve included Reddit, del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, Technorati and Digg for starters. Are there any other services everyone uses I should add?

Questions that mean nothing

I was trying to work on a post where I identified questions that mean nothing but are asked anyway. Everyone knows these questions, they’re kind of matter of fact and reflexive. Sometimes they’re said to be polite. Usually they’re not annoying, but sometimes they are.

“Did you find everything you’re looking for?”
“How’s it going?”
“Can I put you on hold?”

The last of those three is by far the most annoying, I couldn’t tell how many times I’ve been asked that question, responded, “No,” and then been put on hold anyway.

Anyone know of any others that are obvious?

Q! What’s Your Favorite Cover Song?

There are tons of great songs out there, and some of them get covered by other bands and get a second life. Of course some of them suck. What are your favorite cover songs?
